Government Announces New Compensation Restraints

Earlier today, the Honourable Dwight Duncan, Ontario’s Minister of Finance, announced a series of new compensation restraints that will apply to government agencies, the Ontario Public Service and the Broader Public Sector. Among the highlights of the government’s announcement are:

    • “Under the plan, executive pay would be permanently capped at no more than double the Premier’s salary — $418,000 per year,” possibly subject to limited exceptions.
    • “Public sector managers would not earn any more money for the next two years than they did last year.”
    • “Managers across the Ontario Public Service (OPS) would see a three-year freeze.”

The government did not introduce a Bill today to put these measures in place. Hicks Morley will continue to monitor these developments closely, and will provide an analysis of the Bill after it has been tabled.
