Lexpert® Names Kathryn Bird one of its “Rising Stars” of 2020

Hicks Morley is pleased to announce that Kathryn Bird has been named one of Lexpert’s 2020 Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40.

Kathryn is a partner in Hicks Morley’s Toronto office and a member of the firm’s Human Rights practice group. Repeatedly recognized as one of Ontario’s leading lawyers on human rights, Kathryn was counsel on several precedent-setting human rights law decisions, including the leading decision on family status accommodation in Ontario.

A leader in the legal community, Kathryn is a member of the Human Rights Tribunal’s Professional Advisory Committee and Subcommittee for the Child and Youth Division, and served as an Executive of the Ontario Bar Association’s Constitutional, Civil Liberties, and Human Rights section. As a member of The Advocates’ Society’s 10+ Standing Committee and Co-Chair of its Mentorship Working Group, she has been instrumental in developing the mentoring programs aimed at improving the retention and experience of underrepresented counsel.

Lauri Reesor, the firm’s human rights practice group leader, says, “Kathryn has an impeccable reputation as a thought leader in human rights litigation. She is a formidable and fierce advocate for her clients, all while balancing the civility and respect that is often required.  Kathryn is a consummate mentor to many Hicks Morley associates, particularly women and racialized associates.  Kathryn’s passion and commitment to the development, support and success of our associates as they embark on their legal careers and build their practices is admirable.”

In addition, Kathryn advises and represents employers on a range of employment and labour matters and claims. Clients describe her as “strong, confident and highly skilled lawyer with exceptional interpersonal skills” and “a strong negotiator [with] the ability to think clearly under pressure…”

Kathryn lends these attributes to firm-wide initiatives supporting Hicks Morley’s Pride Network, Women’s Affinity Group, and the Diversity Committee, where her efforts have helped forge a vibrant, inclusive culture at the firm. She brings that same positive energy, engagement and enthusiasm to her mentorship of associates and students, and to her volunteer work with the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Women’s Art Initiative (WAI).

Presented annually, Lexpert Rising Stars recognizes leading lawyers under 40 who have made outstanding contributions to the legal profession. Winners have a track record of professional achievement and community involvement, and demonstrate exceptional leadership, teamwork, client service and business acumen. The firm is proud of Kathryn’s contributions to the legal community and to the firm and congratulates her on this prestigious award.
