The Opportunity

The newly created position of Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) will be a key
member of the Senior Management Team. The Director will provide leadership, strategic
direction and expertise in executing our diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan.
The Director, DEI will be responsible for overseeing existing DEI initiatives, and
recommending, developing, and implementing new DEI initiatives and programs that support
Hicks Morley’s strategic plan and objectives related to DEI. Reporting to the Chief Operating
Officer (COO) and collaborating with the Director, Human Resources and the Director,
Professional Resources, the Director, DEI will ensure that the firm’s DEI strategy, policies and
practices are successfully developed, implemented and in line with the firm’s values.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, recommend, and execute DEI initiatives and programs to further the firm’s DEI short and long-range objectives.
  • Review and enhance as may be applicable from time to time, the firm’s DEI strategy based on analysis, best practices, and firm objectives.
  • Review and analyse current practices and policies through a DEI lens, assessing any impact on the achievement of the firm’s DEI objectives.
  • Develop and manage future firm demographic and equity surveys.
  • Identify and collect other diversity metrics to identify areas of strength and areas where we can improve our DEI engagement and representation.
  • Develop internal and external tracking and reporting mechanisms for DEI data and strategic objectives.
  • Develop and manage proactive and reactive client reporting on DEI topics.
  • Lead action planning to address issues and celebrate successes.
  • Collaborate with the firm’s DEI committee, Human Resources and Professional Development teams to support recruitment and engagement strategies that attract, develop, and retain employees from diverse backgrounds and equity deserving groups (including Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour, People with Disabilities, LGBTQ2+, Neurodiverse individuals) and ensure equity and inclusion are integrated into all employee programs and processes (e.g., performance reviews).
  • Develop, present and/or facilitate training and professional development to support DEI objectives.
  • Draft internal and external communications regarding DEI efforts and programs.
  • Act as a resource to clients on DEI issues on a billable hour basis
  • Partner with the Joint Health and Safety Committee to ensure our physical spaces are inclusive and created for everyone to work and thrive in. Support AODA compliance, reporting and communications.
  • Partner with other functional groups across the organization to ensure that DEI objectives and achievements are integrated into our external marketing, client communications and reporting, scholarship and sponsorship programs, etc..
  • Identify external trends and stay up-to-date on diversity and equity-related issues, relevant legislation, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirement considered is a post-secondary degree or diploma in social sciences, project management, public policy, human services, business administration, or a related discipline with equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years’ demonstrated experience in the development, design and successful implementation of DEI programs, policies, procedures, projects and other initiatives.
  • Law degree would be considered a significant asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and strong education, lived experience and/or knowledge of best practices in DEI and relevant legislation.
  • Experience in the legal industry or other professional services is an asset.
  • Skilled at engaging in matters that require sensitivity and empathy across a diverse community, excellent judgment, and discretion.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to write reports, organizational communications, presentations and create learning materials to support programs.
  • Takes initiative, works proactively, coordinates, and manages projects with multiple stakeholders in a complex fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing positive change in the field of DEI.
