In Memoriam – Harvey Beresford (1942–2024)
It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Harvey Beresford on December 28, 2024, at the age of 82. Harvey was one of the original founders of Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP, retiring in 2016 after a remarkable career with the firm. After his retirement, he went on to be a part-time Vice Chair at the Ontario Labour Relations Board as well as a successful mediator/arbitrator.
Harvey was admitted to the bar in 1969 and was recognized as one of the leading labour and employment lawyers in Canada. He excelled at many things, particularly negotiations, and was a consummate problem-solver. A leader, a teacher and a skilled relationship-builder, Harvey championed the growth of countless lawyers throughout his career, enthusiastically offering his time and his support. He mentored lawyers on both the basics and the art of collective bargaining, leading several “how to” bargaining programs over the years as part of his commitment to professional development. He also developed and presented workshops, led seminars and lectured extensively on labour law and conflict resolution.
Among his many, many successes as a practitioner, Harvey was instrumental in establishing the labour relations framework for the amalgamation of the City of Toronto and its myriad collective agreements in the late 90s. As the province of Ontario’s lead negotiator, Harvey was also among a small handful of thought leaders who helped pioneer team-based primary care delivery in Ontario, which was a first in Canada at the time.
We are incredibly fortunate to have known and worked alongside Harvey. We are grateful for the contributions Harvey made and the legacy he leaves behind both within the firm and within the community. His passion for the law and his love of the firm will not be forgotten.
He will be missed.
