Ontario Introduces Education Act amendments in New Child Care Oversight Bill

Date: December 3, 2013

On December 3, 2013, the Ontario government introduced Bill 143, the Child Care Modernization Act, 2013, omnibus legislation that would, if passed, enact the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2013, amend the Education Act and the Early Childhood Educators Act, 2007, and repeal the Day Nurseries Act.

The proposed amendments to the Education Act, outlined in Schedule D of the Bill, would require school boards to operate extended day programs or to ensure the operation of third party programs for pupils enrolled in grades 1 to 6, and outline requirements that would apply to third party programs operated for pupils in grades 1 to 6. Under the current Part IX.1 regime, this obligation only extends to pupils enrolled in junior kindergarten and kindergarten.
