Human Resources Legislative Update

Ontario Intends to Extend WSIB Coverage to More Frontline Workers

Date: April 8, 2026

On April 8, 2026, Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development announced that it will be tabling legislation that, if passed, will extend mandatory Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage to workers employed in all privately operated residential care facilities, retirement homes and group homes in the province.

The extension of WSIB coverage to frontline workers in this sector would provide them with access to protections such as wage-replacement benefits, health care benefits and additional supports if they become injured or ill on the job. Workers in this sector who would become eligible for WSIB coverage if the legislation is passed include personal support workers, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and operations staff.
