Jodi Gallagher Healy Quoted by Business Insurance Regarding PTSD Law
Jodi Gallagher Healy was quoted by Business Insurance on May 8, 2016 regarding Bill 163, Ontario’s First Responders Act. Recently, the presumption of work-related PTSD has been considered by several Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions. However, the concern over potential costs and possible discrimination has also been raised. Municipal employers in Ontario fall into the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board’s Schedule 2 category, which means they pay claims on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This is unlike Schedule 1 employers, who pay annual premiums based on the board’s classification of their activities and total insurable payrolls. Jodi explains, “WSIB claims for Schedule 2 employers can be very, very costly, particularly these kinds of claims where people may be off work for a very long period of time. It has a significant financial impact. I think what we’re going to see is a growth in demand for excess indemnity insurance.”
