Siobhan O’Brien Quoted in The Lawyers Weekly on Transgender Rights Bill C-16
Siobhan O’Brien was quoted in the June 10, 2016 issue of The Lawyers Weekly regarding Bill C-16, which proposes to include gender identity and gender expression as prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act and hate speech provisions under the Criminal Code. The article illustrates that the need to argue that transgender rights protection exist, are removed by the inclusion of these grounds. Siobhan extends the explanation to employers who must now identify the need to avoid discrimination in hiring practices and offer accommodation to employees. She states that adding gender identity and expression as a protected ground, “should have an impact to the extent that human resources professionals will now be reminded of these obligations and it’s really brought to the forefront.”
