Ontario Proposes New Requirements on Construction Sites

Date: March 15, 2023

On March 15, 2023, Ontario announced proposed changes to jobsite requirements in the construction sector.

If approved and filed, the proposed regulatory changes would require construction employers to provide safe, private, and clean restroom facilities, including a minimum of one designated washroom for women on every jobsite. The total number of restrooms required across most jobsites would be doubled.

The announcement also states that portable washrooms would be required to be private and completely enclosed, have adequate lighting and hand sanitizer (where running water is not reasonably possible).

Proposed regulatory changes would also require that personal protective equipment and clothing be properly fitted to women and  workers with diverse body types.

The government states that these changes are intended to encourage women’s participation in the skilled trades by creating a more safe and accessible work environment.

The proposed changes, if approved, would come into force on July 1, 2023.
