Significant Changes to Ontario Policing Legislation Coming Into Force April 1, 2024

Date: January 8, 2024

The Ontario government has proclaimed into force key provisions of Bill 68, Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act, 2019 which enacts the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 (Act).

Effective April 1, 2024, the Ontario Police Services Act, 1990 will be repealed and replaced with the Act.

For further information about these changes, see our FTR Now of April 2019, Important Changes to Policing in Ontario.

Note that specific sections of the Act were not proclaimed into force on April 1, 2024. These include the prohibition against special constables from holding themselves out as police offers (which will come into force on April 1, 2025) and public consultations on regulation-making authority, among others.
