Details about WSIB Reimbursement Process for Paid IDEL Now Available
Date: June 1, 2021
On April 29, 2021, the Ontario government amended the Employment Standards Act, 2000 to provide paid infectious disease emergency leave (IDEL) for certain absences related to COVID-19. Employers who provide paid IDEL to eligible employees are entitled to reimbursement through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), up to $200 per employee per day taken. Reimbursement applications to the WSIB must be made within 120 days of the date the employee was paid. At the time paid IDEL was introduced, details of the WSIB reimbursement process were not yet available.
The government has now updated its website page Ontario COVID-19 Worker Income Protection Benefit to provide those details. Employers may now submit claims to the WSIB for reimbursement. They will receive a claim confirmation number and can track the claim status. Payments are scheduled to begin by the end of June and continue on a bi-weekly basis. An approved claim will take approximately two weeks to process. The website page also provides details on how to obtain assistance in making a claim or details about the program.
