Equal Wage Treatment Regulations Coming Soon

Date: March 9, 2026

In the next few months, regulations are expected to come into force under the Canada Labour Code.

These regulations will prohibit federally regulated employers from paying an employee performing the same work a lower rate of wages because they have a different employment status, i.e, because they work part-time rather than full-time, or because they are temporary employees rather than permanent employees. For the prohibition to apply, specific conditions must exist. Additionally, there will be some exceptions to the prohibition.

Federally regulated temporary help agencies will also be prohibited from paying their employees less than their clients’ employees when they are performing substantially the same work under the same conditions. Again, there will be some exceptions to the prohibition.

We will provide additional details when the new regulations come into force.
