Overview

This webinar will focus on updating and clarifying issues of Anti-Black Racism and systemic discrimination, with an emphasis on how adjudicators assess claims of racial and systemic discrimination, both broadly and in the school board setting. Through a discussion of adjudicative approaches and best practices, school board leaders will leave this session with an improved understanding of their legal obligations as they relate to providing an environment that is free from racist conduct and treatment.

Format

In this session we will discuss the following topics:

  • the different forms of racist conduct which school boards may have to respond to, including structural and systemic racism;
  • how adjudicators will assess and address allegations of racist conduct from employers and service providers;
  • considerations for the effective implementation of anti-discrimination and anti-racism policies and procedures; and,
  • how to address complaints of Anti-Black Racism arising from students, employees and community groups.

Audience and Learning Objectives

This interactive session is designed for school board human resources and administration leaders involved in addressing human rights and equity matters, both in the board’s role as a service provider and as an employer. Attendees will gain insights into the various ways in which complaints of Anti-Black Racism may arise within the school board context. They will gain practical tools and learn how to develop strategies to address complaints when they arise so they can create an environment that is free from racism and discrimination.

This webinar will include an interactive Q&A feature. A panel discussion will be built into the last 10 minutes of the session to address audience questions that were submitted.
